Weight Bench and Squat Rack Sets With Weights: What the Starter Packages Really Include

Search for a weight bench with weights, or a squat rack and bench with weights and a bar, and the results look like one product. They are not. What actually exists falls into three groups: standard benches with bench-mounted uprights that ship with 80 to 100 lb of 1 inch vinyl plates and a short bar; Olympic bench and rack combos with real capacity that ship with no weights at all; and maker packages from REP, Rogue and Fringe Sport that bundle a bar and plates, sometimes a rack and bench, at a much higher price. This guide lays out all three, with the published specs, then shows how to put together a starter set at three budgets without paying for parts you will outgrow.

The three kinds of “bench with weights”

Type What you get Plate standard Where it tops out Best for
Standard bench kit Bench, uprights on the bench, short 1 inch bar, 80 to 100 lb of vinyl plates 1 inch standard 300 to 600 lb bench rating; bar rated about 100 lb; no safeties A first year of light pressing and leg work
Olympic bench and rack combo Adjustable bench, a separate or rear squat rack for a 6 or 7 ft bar, often a preacher pad and leg developer 2 inch Olympic 500 to 900 lb bench; rack 660 lb where stated; no bar or plates Anyone who will add a 7 ft bar and real plates
Maker package Bar, bumper or iron plates, collars; REP adds a rack and bench 2 inch Olympic 1,000 lb racks and 1,500 lb bars Buying the right gear once

The naming is the trap. Standard kits are the only ones that include weights, and they are also the only ones built around a bar rated for about 100 lb. The Olympic combos that get thousands of reviews are sold without a single plate, and their page titles say “with weights” only in the sense that they have somewhere to store them.

Standard kit (includes plates)Olympic combo (no plates)1 in bar, 5 to 6 ft, rated about 100 lb80 to 100 lb of 1 in plates in the boxBench 300 to 500 lb2 in bar, 7 ft, rated 500 lb plusRack and bench only; plates are extraBench 500 to 900 lb, rack 500 to 900 lb
The two families. Standard kits ship plates on a short 1 inch bar; Olympic combos ship a rack and bench for a 7 foot 2 inch bar and leave the plates to you.

Standard weight bench with weights: the three sets that actually include plates

These are the sets that match the search. All three use 1 inch standard plates (vinyl-coated cement), a bar under five feet, and uprights bolted to the bench rather than a separate rack.

Set Included Bench rating Notes Link
Marcy standard bench with 80 lb set (CB-20111) Bench with flat and incline back, barbell uprights, dual-action leg developer, standard bar, four plates totaling 80 lb 600 lb per the listing (the 100 lb variants of the same family say 300 lb) The deepest review history of any bench-with-weights kit; the plate breakdown is not stated Check on Amazon
Marcy standard bench with 100 lb set (PM-2084) 5-position back, leg developer, 2 x 2 in frame, 1 in bar, six plates: two 25, two 15, two 10 lb 300 lb Same family as above; 20 lb more plate for a fair bit more money Check on Amazon
CAP standard bench with leg developer and 100 lb set (FMSIS-100P) 5-position back, leg developer, J-cup uprights, 54.6 in bar, two 25, two 15, two 10 lb plates, spring collars 350 lb 12 gauge frame; a new listing with a thin review history when checked Check on Amazon

What to know before buying one. The bar in these kits is rated around 100 lb and is too short for a separate squat rack, so the set is finished the day you want to squat more than the included plates. The leg developer and incline make them better than they look for dumbbell-style accessory work. If you buy one, buy the Marcy 80 lb set and spend the difference on a second pair of 25s; if you think you will squat, skip this group and read on.

Olympic bench and squat rack combos (no weights included)

This is where the well-reviewed listings live. Every one of these ships without a bar or plates, and most state it twice. What you are buying is a bench rated for real loads, a rack or uprights that take a 7 ft Olympic bar, and usually a preacher pad and leg developer.

Two patterns to read past. First, the big capacity headlines (1,980 lb, 2,350 lb) are sums of three or four component ratings; the number that matters is the bench rating and, for squats, the rack rating, and only YOLEO and Flybird publish the rack figure. Second, several listings disagree with themselves on capacity. Where that happens we show both numbers.

The cheapest rack-style bench we found, the BalanceFrom BF-RS40, has thousands of ratings but the lowest score in the group and three conflicting capacity and dimension figures on its own page, so it is not in the table. Our adjustable weight bench guide explains why pad width, pad gap and seat angle matter more than the capacity headline once you press heavy.

The bar and plate sets to add to a combo

Pick the plate standard first. A 1 inch standard set is cheaper and matches the standard kits above; a 2 inch Olympic set is what every combo in the table above and every rack on this site is built for. Our Plate Calculator works out how many plates you need for your target lifts.

Three starter packages you can build from the tables

Package 1: the cheapest bench with weights that is still useful

Marcy standard bench with the 80 lb set, plus a second pair of 25 lb standard plates when the included ones run out. You get flat and incline pressing, a leg developer and a bar to learn with. Stop here if the goal is light pressing and accessory work. For a first full-body setup that also covers rows and pull-ups, the dumbbell and band kit in our budget home gym guide is the better spend.

Package 2: an Olympic bench and rack combo with a real bar

YOLEO FORGE 1980 or the Marcy MD-879 two-piece, plus the CAP 7 ft Classic bar and the CAP 110 lb iron set with two Amazon Basics 45s. That is a 7 ft bar, 200 lb of iron, a bench rated for heavy pressing and a rack with catches for squats, all on the 2 inch standard you will keep. The YOLEO publishes a 660 lb rack rating; the Marcy has a walk-in rack with safety locks but no published rack figure.

Package 3: skip the combo, buy a cage

If the floor allows it, a full power cage with safeties on both sides plus a flat or adjustable bench beats every combo above for solo squatting and benching. The ULTRA FUEGO cage and the Flybird bench from the budget guide, the CAP bar and plates, and you have a rack that takes 1,000 lb and a pulley system in the box. The power racks under $500 comparison covers the cage choices, and the Power Rack Comparison Tool lines any two up by spec.

Maker packages: what REP, Rogue and Fringe Sport sell

Bells of Steel Home Gym Builder Pick a rack, bar, bench and accessories; price builds from your choices Depends on the rack chosen Configurator; no fixed package price

None of these makers sells a fixed-price box with rack, bar, plates and bench inside; Titan Fitness does not sell packages at all, and Rogue’s packages are bar and plate sets with the rack as an option. REP’s Trailhead is the closest thing to a true starter package, and its total moves with the bench, plate and dumbbell choices. For a one-order purchase with a published rack rating, it is the one to configure.

Standard or Olympic: decide this before anything else

  • 1 inch standard plates and bars are cheaper and lighter, and every bench-with-weights kit uses them. The bars are rated around 100 lb and most are under 5 ft, so they cannot be racked on a separate squat rack.
  • 2 inch Olympic is what every combo, cage, rack and plate guide on this site assumes. A 7 ft bar fits every rack above; plates from any brand fit any Olympic bar. Buy standard only if you are sure you will never squat or deadlift with the bar.
  • Mixing does not work without adapter sleeves, which add length and wobble. Pick one.

For the rest of the room, the Home Gym Room Planner fits a bench, rack and bar into your floor plan, and the home gym flooring guide covers what to put under them.

Weight bench with weights FAQ

How much weight comes with a weight bench set?

80 to 100 lb of 1 inch vinyl plates plus a bar of 15 to 25 lb, in the Marcy and CAP kits. No Olympic bench and rack combo on Amazon includes plates.

Can I bench heavy on a bench with built-in uprights?

The uprights hold the bar at the start of a set but have no safeties, and the bars in these kits are rated around 100 lb. For heavy solo benching you want a cage or a combo with a separate rack and catches, or spotter arms.

Is a squat rack and bench with weights and a bar sold as one package?

Not on Amazon. The sets with weights are bench-only kits; the sets with a squat rack ship without weights. REP’s Trailhead package is the closest single order that includes a rack, bench, bar and plates.

What is the cheapest full starter set for Olympic lifting at home?

A bench and rack combo from the table, the CAP 7 ft Classic bar and a 110 lb iron set with two 45s. That is about 200 lb of plates on a bar rated 500 lb, which covers most lifters’ first year.

Are the 1,980 lb and 2,350 lb capacities real?

They are the sum of the bench, rack, preacher and leg developer ratings. Read the bench rating and the rack rating separately; those are the ones that hold you and the bar.

Standard or Olympic for a beginner?

Olympic, unless the set will only ever be used for light pressing. Standard kits cost less up front and are replaced within a year by anyone who keeps training.
